8 Migrants Drown in US-Mexico Border Crossing Attempt

U.S. authorities say eight migrants have died trying to cross a hazardous portion of the Rio Grande in their attempt to enter the United States.

Immigration officials said Friday that 37 people were rescued from the same portion of the river located near Eagle Pass, Texas, in the southern region of the state.

Mexican officials say they have rescued 39 migrants from the river’s raging waters.

The river is higher and swifter than usual, following recent heavy rains.

The migrants’ countries of origin were not immediately clear.
